Roman Numeral Date Converter

A date in Roman numerals is three separate conversions — the day, the month and the year — joined by a separator: March 14, 2025 becomes III · XIV · MMXXV in month·day·year order, or XIV · III · MMXXV in the day·month·year order used across most of the world. Pick your date below, choose the order and separator, and use the checklist before the result goes anywhere permanent.

Years are limited to 1–3999, the full range of standard Roman notation. The date is validated against the real calendar, leap years included — February 30 does not exist and will be rejected.

Before you order: the tattoo & engraving checklist

A converted date on a screen can be fixed in a second. The same date on skin, inside a wedding band or cut into stone cannot. Tattoo artists and engravers will happily work from your reference — which makes your reference the one thing that has to be right. Run through this list first:

Months at a glance

Months only run from 1 to 12, so their numerals never change — worth learning by sight if your date has a subtractive month:

Which separator and order should you choose?

There is no single official layout, which is exactly why the order question matters. In the United States, dates are spoken month-first, and month·day·year (III · XIV · MMXXV) is the order most American tattoo and engraving clients expect. Most of Europe, Latin America and Asia speak day-first, making day·month·year (XIV · III · MMXXV) the natural read. Dots are the classical inscription style — the one used on monuments and cornerstones — while dashes (III-XIV-MMXXV) suit contemporary jewellery and minimalist designs. Choose the version that reads correctly to the people who will see it every day, then hold it up against the checklist above.

Turning the date into the invitation, too? If this date is a wedding, the free invitation maker at Vowlio builds a complete online wedding invitation around it — your names, the day, the venue and the story, published as a single link you can share with guests, no account and no cost. Many couples pair a Roman-numeral engraving inside the rings with the invitation that carries the same date.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write March 14, 2025 in Roman numerals?

III · XIV · MMXXV in month·day·year order (March = III, 14 = XIV, 2025 = MMXXV). In day·month·year order it is XIV · III · MMXXV.

Which order do tattoo artists usually use?

Whichever order you bring them — artists engrave the reference you provide, which is why confirming the order out loud (checklist item one) matters more than any convention. In the US that is usually month·day·year; in most other countries, day·month·year.

Can I convert a date before the year 1 or after 3999?

No — standard Roman numerals have no zero, no negative numbers and no symbol beyond M repeated three times, so years run from 1 to 3999. For a BC date, jewellers typically engrave the standard numeral for the year number and add “BC” in plain letters.

Does the converter handle leap years?

Yes. February 29 is accepted only in leap years, and impossible dates such as February 30 or April 31 are rejected with an explanation instead of being converted.
