The 1980s in Roman Numerals
Every year of the 1980s, converted: 1980 is MCMLXXX and 1989 is MCMLXXXIX. Birth years from this decade are among the most converted numbers there are — for tattoos, pendants, anniversary pieces and the copyright line at the end of a film.
Year by year: 1980–1989
| Year | Roman numerals | Turns in 2026 | Year | Roman numerals | Turns in 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1980 | MCMLXXX | 46 | 1981 | MCMLXXXI | 45 |
| 1982 | MCMLXXXII | 44 | 1983 | MCMLXXXIII | 43 |
| 1984 | MCMLXXXIV | 42 | 1985 | MCMLXXXV | 41 |
| 1986 | MCMLXXXVI | 40 | 1987 | MCMLXXXVII | 39 |
| 1988 | MCMLXXXVIII | 38 | 1989 | MCMLXXXIX | 37 |
“Turns in 2026” is the age someone born in that year reaches on their birthday in 2026 — the number that matters for milestone pieces: a 40th in 2026 means a 1986 birth year, MCMLXXXVI.
Reading a 1980s year
Every year in this decade opens with MCM — M for 1000, CM for 900, the 1900s. What changes from year to year is the tail after MCM: the tens and units follow exactly the pattern of the 1–100 chart, so 1984 ends in IV and 1989 in IX. If the year is part of a full date — a birth date on a pendant, a wedding date inside a ring — use the date converter so the day and month are converted with it, in the right order.
