The 1970s in Roman Numerals
Every year of the 1970s, converted: 1970 is MCMLXX and 1979 is MCMLXXIX. Birth years from this decade are among the most converted numbers there are — for tattoos, pendants, anniversary pieces and the copyright line at the end of a film.
Year by year: 1970–1979
| Year | Roman numerals | Turns in 2026 | Year | Roman numerals | Turns in 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1970 | MCMLXX | 56 | 1971 | MCMLXXI | 55 |
| 1972 | MCMLXXII | 54 | 1973 | MCMLXXIII | 53 |
| 1974 | MCMLXXIV | 52 | 1975 | MCMLXXV | 51 |
| 1976 | MCMLXXVI | 50 | 1977 | MCMLXXVII | 49 |
| 1978 | MCMLXXVIII | 48 | 1979 | MCMLXXIX | 47 |
“Turns in 2026” is the age someone born in that year reaches on their birthday in 2026 — the number that matters for milestone pieces: a 40th in 2026 means a 1986 birth year, MCMLXXXVI.
Reading a 1970s year
Every year in this decade opens with MCM — M for 1000, CM for 900, the 1900s. What changes from year to year is the tail after MCM: the tens and units follow exactly the pattern of the 1–100 chart, so 1974 ends in IV and 1979 in IX. If the year is part of a full date — a birth date on a pendant, a wedding date inside a ring — use the date converter so the day and month are converted with it, in the right order.
